Darkness and creepy isolated places like the graveyard, jump scares and also supernatural entities like ghosts and demons, strange noises such as footsteps and eerie soundtracks are often expected from a horror movie. Most of these ideas are from horror movies from the olden time.
Certain visual strategies in a movie like Insidious heighten these fear expectations. We are made to expect danger with the scary atmosphere created by dim lighting and even by the eerie soundtracks. These methods produce an immersive horror experience that keeps us wondering all the time in addition to providing frights.
When Dalton suddenly goes into a coma at the start of the movie, the spooky atmosphere of Insidious is established. All sorts of medical instruments are seen hooked to him as he lies in bed, shadows are seen surrounding him implying that his circumstances are anything but normal. At this point, the family realizes they are dealing with a supernatural issue rather than just a medical one, and their entire world starts to crumble.
As the hauntings became more intense, Elise, a psychic who Dalton’s parents hired, explains that Dalton’s spirit is trapped in an otherworldly location called “The Further.” This is when the film changes course since it offers a completely different world with ghosts and otherworldly creatures instead of merely a typical haunted house scenario. Elise said that Dalton’s spirit was at risk of being lost there forever. Josh, Dalton’s father, decides to enter “The Further” himself to get his son back. At this point, things get even more dramatic as he explores a creepy, darkened version of their home and runs into the spirits that are haunting Dalton. Josh has to deal with these disturbing entities as well as his own history of paranormal activity.
The epic climax begins as Josh confronts the red-faced monster that is holding Dalton captive. It’s a terrifying conclusion that shows how far Josh will go to keep his family safe.
But just when it appears that they could have escaped, Elise learns that Josh is not quite right. By the time she snaps a photo of him, he has changed; something from “The Further” has replaced him. We get a frightening sensation at the end that the nightmare might not be over. These sequences capture Insidious’s tense atmosphere flawlessly.
