Scream 1996 (Tianna)

I don’t know very much about horror because it’s not what I like watching in my free time. What I do know is that there are different types of horror for example slasher, paranormal and psychological horror. Uses grotesque and disturbing imagery often shown through death and violence. The villain of the story can be out for revenge which is what drives him to kill people. Most horror movies have haunting soundtracks that are supposed to invoke feelings of fear. A horror movie can use different types of scares for example a jump scare. The villain of a horror movie can be human or other. I got my ideas mostly form small clips I see of movies on social media. The horror movie I watched was the very first scream released in 1996. A technique they used was the use of light and dark scenes. What I mean by this is that when the murders were being committed it was typically at night meaning that there were more shadows and when it was light outside it was almost as if everything was fine. Even though the murderers aren’t announced until practically the end of the movie you get a sense for who it is. Which is why I feel like the use if the different lights emphasized the split personalities of Billy and Stu which made the scenes where a murder being committed more eerie. Although as the movie went on more sinister things began happening in daylight breaking that feeling of safety being in day light usually gives us. Something that helps lead the story is the phone calls the victims receive from the murderer. As soon as they answer the phone you realize what’s about to happen but because it doesn’t happen right away the suspense builds in whoever is watching it. So, when the killer comes out and commits a murder it still scares you because even though you knew it was coming the suspense building up in you make you react. An important part of the movie I feel is at the very start of the movie when the killer calls Casey it reveals much about the killer’s personality. Like that he’s quick to anger but likes to play with his victims. The personality shows through out the entire movie, but I feel like when you first see it is when it has the biggest impact.

  1. Tianna, I really like how you picked a movie that was the first of its sequel. And it interests me how the scream shot last year might have way different and better camera effects to showcase the jumpscares as you mentioned. Another thing i liked that you noticed is your mention of how daylight gave a sense of security to the viewers since the murders were being committed at night. However, i was looking forward to your mention of how the issue of the murders stopped? Or did they at all?
I was also wondering what type of camera movements would have been involved to showcase the jumpscares? would it be more static or tracking along with the killer?
Overall, i think it is a good overview of the movie!
